Even though baseball season starts tonight and the NCAA basketball championship is tomorrow night, perhaps, the biggest media sports event this week will be Tiger Woods’ first appearance this year on the PGA Tour. Since November, when he went from the top of the sports world to the bottom in a matter of days, we haven’t seen much of Tiger except for his well-planned out press conference a few weeks ago.
While many have said that the Masters Tournament is the most controlled tournament on the tour, it will be intersting to see how or if Tiger’s corporate voice changes or remains the same from this point on depending on the type of media coverage he receives. Corporate voice is all a part of the Mediatude Equation (which I’ll blog about at another time) which helps those covered by the media, manage the media. Corporate Voice is what I like to call your personality–who you are, what you stand for, your values all rolled up into one. You must first establish and know these factors that make up your personality. Then you must market your coporate voice, so others know what it is and use it to your advantage when trying to manage the media. If it is not consistent, it’s the first thing media will go after and use against you.
So, here’s a fun and intersting “assignment” for you. Start this week by studying Tiger’s, or someone else’s , corporate voice for a couple of months. Watch the media coverage your indidividual, company, team, or whomever receives and see if their corporate voice tends to change depending on their media coverage. By doing so, you’ll start to see how one’s corporate voice plays a huge part in not only managing the media, but how other’s see you as well.
