Teaching media seminars and classes are two of my most favorite things to do. Over the years teaching and working in the media, I have learned an enormous amount about the media and how a story is covered and played out. This week, here are seven things I teach about the media that can help you with your corporate voice and mediatude.
1. Many media reporters have huge egos regardless of their pay.
2. Media expects access to CEOs and their corporation/organization.
3. Media does not like to be supervised by public relations staff (listening in on interviews, requesting questions prior to interviews, being present, etc.)
4. Media want CEOs and staff to answer questions naturally, not always politically correct with a PR spin.
5. Media appreciate having additional statistical information and background information about corporations, products and staff.
6. The media’s job is to ask tough questions that the general public may want to know but do not have the opportunity to ask.
7. The media can be your ally or foe depending on the situation.
