I like Johnny Damon. A lot of fans don’t– especially some of those in Boston who feel he was a traitor when he went to play for their rival, the New York Yankees. But we’re not talking baseball here, we’re talking corporate voice and Damon has a good one.
He made a decision earlier this week to stay and finish the year playing for the Detroit Tigers instead of taking his option to be traded back to the Boston Red Sox. “These guys really like me here,” Damon said Tuesday and he knew it because he spoke to each one (Detroit Tiger) individually before making his decision to be sure he was wanted in the Tigers’ clubhouse. That’s pretty cool. He also texted some of his former teammates in Boston for their opinions. They all wanted him to be where he’s happy and he’s happy in Detroit they said.
Damon hasn’t said anything negative about Boston or New York during his whole time in Detroit. He became a team player very quickly. He also on several occasions said he likes playing with the “young kids” and hopes he can help mentor them. The “kids” respect Damon, too. No problems on or off the field. A good corporate voice.
Damon’s corporate voice has helped make him a favorite in Detroit as he was in Boston and New York, too. He interviews well, keeping his corporate voice consistent, understanding how it fits into his own media coverage as well as his team and his city. His batting average maybe isn’t where he’d like it to be, but his corporate voice is batting a thousand.
