I just can’t let this one go. I understand “trash talking” is a component in most pro sports and college sports as well. It’s especially big in the NFL and NBA and is used as a way to get pumped up for an upcoming game, to motivate a team after viewing locker room bulletin board postings or just to get some pre-game media hype. I get it. But, don’t forget that trash talking also can become part of a team’s or league’s corporate voice in a quick media minute.
According to this Fox.Sports article http://www.comcast.net/slideshow/sports-trash-talkers, there’s a need to replace T.O. (Terrell Owens) as the number one NFL trash talker. The article offers 12 possible contenders. They all have seemed to met the criteria to take T. O.’s place. The NFL as well as other pro leagues work at keeping their corporate voices positive. However they can’t control their players’ verbal comments, nor should they. But sometimes, more often than not, those comments can start a negative media roll not just for the league’s corporate voice, but for the team’s and individual player’s as well. So, be aware of how any corporate voice can be influenced by a number of variables, check your corporate voice often and learn how to manage it to keep it healthy.
